Multi-Mode POTA Activation – South Hill Park (GB-4278)
The Bracknell Amateur Radio Club successfully lit up the airwaves this past weekend, completing a lively Parks On The Air (POTA) activation at South Hill Park (GB-4278).
Although many of the club’s most active operators were away representing BARC at the prestigious RSGB Convention, the members who turned out put on a clinic in multi-mode portable operation. The event showcased the club’s skills and the versatility of modern amateur radio equipment.
Multi-Mode Masters: Low Power, High Contacts
The team achieved a successful multi-mode activation, proving that you don’t need high power to make global contacts.
CW (Morse Code) Excellence:
The smooth flow of dots and dashes was thanks to Callum (2E0XNE), who did a fantastic job operating CW solo. He demonstrated skill and focus while operating the new Yaesu FTX-1 radio.
SSB
Leading the way on voice mode was Tony (G8TEE). Using another Yaesu FTX-1 radio and just 10 watts of power, Tony showed superb operating discipline and clarity, making reliable contacts and securing the activation’s SSB goals.
FT8 Digital Success:
Mick (G0MGK) brought the speed and efficiency of digital communication to the park. Operating his compact QMX radio, Mick logged some fantastic contacts on FT8, quickly proving the power of weak-signal digital modes in a portable setting.

What is POTA?
The Parks On The Air program encourages amateur radio operators to set up temporary stations in public parks and natural areas to promote the hobby, test their portable operating skills, and provide contacts for “hunters” around the world.
The successful activation of South Hill Park (GB-4278) by BARC has put this local gem on the global amateur radio map, giving thousands of other operators a new park to “hunt.” This event was a brilliant display of technical proficiency and team spirit, confirming that the Bracknell Amateur Radio Club has plenty of talent, even with key members away!
