A Fun Sunday Afternoon Activating POTA at Westmorland Park GB-4283

Bracknell Amateur Radio Club (BARC) had a fantastic time activating Westmorland Park
(ref GB-4283) as part of the Parks On The Air (POTA) initiative. The event was a huge
success, with 12 members attending to set up and operate various stations.

A Day of Radio Fun

The park activation was a great opportunity for members to get on the air from a different
location and to practice their field operating skills. The team worked together to quickly set up
several stations, allowing for a range of bands and modes to be used throughout the day.

The bands we activated included:

  • 2m FM and 4m FM for local and regional contacts.
  • 15m CW (Morse code), which proved popular for making long-distance contacts.
  • 40m SSB (Single Sideband), a favorite for mid-range daytime contacts.
  • 20m FT8, a digital mode known for its efficiency in weak signal conditions.

The variety of bands and modes allowed us to connect with other POTA activators and hunters
across the UK and Europe. The day was filled with the familiar sounds of radio chatter and
Morse code, creating a vibrant and exciting atmosphere.

Welcoming a New Member

We were particularly excited to have a new member, Fin (18), join us for his first field day. Fin is
currently working towards his Foundation License and the activation provided him with a
valuable, hands-on experience. He had the opportunity to observe and assist with setting up
antennas, logging contacts and even had a go at transmitting under supervision.

Welcoming new members like Fin is what amateur radio is all about. We’re proud to provide a
supportive and encouraging environment for newcomers to learn and grow their skills. We hope
this experience will inspire him as he continues on his journey to become a licensed amateur
radio operator.
