Making Lightbulbs – John Holden

Following a cancellation earlier in the year due to the record summer temperatures, we were pleased to welcome John Holden to our September meeting to offer us his presentation on the design, development and making of the electric lightbulb.

Knowing very little about the origins of the electric light bulb, it was amazing to see some of the ingenious and originally very mechanical designs of the first light bulbs. The fact that there were so many scientists all working on differing designs led to a wide variety of filament materials and structures to maintain a vacuum within the bulb.

John worked through over 70 slides during his 1 hour presentation which explained some of the major designs. A thoroughly interesting talk, followed by many questions from our members. A big thank you to John for visiting us with his entertaining and informative talk.

Following John’s presentation, our Club RSGB Brickworks Champion, Daniel G4DGC, had the pleasure of presenting Lee G0RSZ with his well earned Silver Brickworks Award Certificate. Congratulation Lee.
