August Picnic Meet-up

For the first time since the Covid-19 Lockdown began, members of the BARC were able to meet for a socially distanced meet-up and picnic at Lily Hill Park in Bracknell.

Following a week of dry hot weather, the afternoon of our first post-lockdown meeting was greeted with lightning, thunder and rain. Luckily, this passed over by 18:30 leaving a fresher and slightly cooler feel to the evening.

BARC Meeting in Lily Hill Park
Meetup and Picnic on England’s longest picnic bench.

The longest picnic bench in England provided all the space we needed for a safe, socially distanced, outdoor meeting. It was good to meet new and see familiar faces in person again and there was a lot of catching-up to do. Members brought along their own picnic and an ice cold beer drink.

There were some interesting and unusual radios brought along, including Dave G3YMCs 160m DF Receiver and Martin 2E0XDA`s Steepletone World Radio.

Alister G0NEF arranged and set-up a mini Direction Finding exercise in the park and brought along his Arduino based DF transmitter and a number of RD3500D DF receivers. It was really good to have Alister there to explain how the DF Receivers worked and how to use the ferrite and sense antennas to locate the transmitter.

With the light failing us at around 21:00 it was time to set-off home. It is hoped that with Covid-19 restrictions permitting we will be able to meet-up again in person for our September meeting. Thanks to Alister G0NEF for organising the fun DF exercise and bringing all the kit.

Alister has also offered to run a small Direction Finding contest for us, so check our website, social media and groups.io reflector for news on the event.
